Shea butter is a solid oil received from the nuts of the Karite Tree found only in Africa. It is a natural product that is still devised by hand in the villages of west and east Africa. There are two (2) species of Karite tree; the Vitellaria Parodoxa found in west Africa which is the most mutual source of shea butter available today, and the Vitellaria Nilotica found in east Africa, the source of nilotica butter which is much more rare.

As an ingredient in skin care productions it helps to improve skin tone and elasticity and helps skin look smoother making wrinkling less noticeable. It likewise helps to even skin tone and gets rid of rough, scaly, arid skin; making skin softer and more supple.

What is the divergence amid raw and refined shea butter?

Raw: This butter may not be processed further after cooling, or it may be lightly filtered and is still considered “raw”. It has all of it is natural constituents (nutrients, color,) intact with an earthy, smoky aroma, and pale yellow or creamy white color. It likewise has the most eminent concentration of vitamins and nutrients and the longest shelf life, lasting with regards to 5 years. However, a good deal of find it is scent to be unpleasant. If the butter is fresh and not rancid the odor disappears soon after application to the skin.

Naturally Refined: In this procedure raw shea butter is melted and “washed” with water. The melted butter and water mixture is transposed to a vacuum reactor where air, and steam removes the odor. Next, the butter is mixed with diatomaceous earth, to remove most of the color, before being filtered by pressing through various layers of paper and cloth. The final step is filtration to remove little corpuscles and impurities. This yields butter that is very pale yellow or white with no odor. Some of the vitamin and nutrient properties are lost, but splendid moisturizing and skin conditioning results may still be received from this butter. Naturally refined works best for use in scented and unscented skin care products.

Ultra Refined: Shea butter that is processed with chemical solvents (hexane), develops a cosmetic grade butter that is pure white, with no odor. However almost all vitamins and nutrients are lost, and the chemical processing diminishes or destroys all beneficial natural qualities.

Which is Better: Raw or Refined?

Choosing amidst raw or refined shea butter is strictly a matter of preference. If the smell of raw shea butter is offensive to you, you may prefer naturally refined or nilotica which has the mildest scent and softest texture. Shea butter that is fresh will have to never have a strong, rancid odor, or an odor that lingers long after the butter has been used to the skin. Strong, unpleasing odor is a sign that the butter has become rancid, has been handled improperly, or is old.

4Skin Saver
By CADmonkichi
I ordered this product hoping it would clear up my keratosis pilaris on my arms and legs. As my skin also is affected by hyperpigmentation my KP bumps are also dark little spots. After the 1st application the size and dark color of the bumps have mainly improved. Amazing. I’ve used Lac-Hydrin (per dermatologist rec), cocoa butter amidst other lotions and nothing’s worked. I also have constantly chapped lips no matter what balm I used. I rubbed a tiny bit on my lips and this butter’s been far more effective than anything else I’ve used. I did observe there is a slight scent but don’t find it offensive.

4Nice quality but pricey
By CheddarisBetter
I was attempting to find an unrefined shea butter, so it seemed that the reviews for the product are in general good.

The product is very nice quality–of course it has the unrefined shea butter smell. What is also nice is that it is not terrifically hard; it does not take a ton of crusade to dig a little amount out to use.

I pulled a star off, however, due to price. I’ve found other shea butter that is invented by reasonable trade, which is a lot more inexpensive than this product. The stuff I got, though, was of a harder consistency, which I did not care for much, but the quality seemed to be on par with this.

What IS nice regarding this product is that it is softer and comes in a nice jar….other stuff I’ve ordered comes in bags. I would order both, probably, because I like to keep the containers that the AAA Shea Butter comes in.
